A paradox: the more we are obliged to choose, the more anxious we become. And today we have no choice but to choose. Like the goods on display in a shopping-mall, our relationships, our careers, our bodies, our identities seem to be a matter of completely free choice. Paradoxically, the result is not freedom but crippling anxiety, depression, and feelings of guilt and inadequacy. In this talk we shall see what psychoanalysis has to say about this modern malaise.
